MAPLE GROVE, Minn. (AP) - As one of a handful of clubs with new coaches and a new offense to install, the Minnesota Vikings stand to lose a lot from the lingering lockout.
The labor impasse has taken away valuable offseason development time.
Oh, plus they have a quarterback to break in, as well, whether or not it is first-round draft pick Christian Ponder or a veteran they could sign as soon as the owners and players forge an agreement to allow totally free company to begin.
Coach Leslie Frazier will not purchase this behind-the-eight-ball concept for his Vikings. Extra stress to catch up when the function stoppage ends is merely perceived, Frazier insisted.
``You anticipate bringing everybody with each other and type of shaping and molding your team and making the way of life which you want on your team, and when that time arrives we'll have the ability to get that carried out,'' Frazier said, adding: ``Not a real mystery as to how our team would look. The fortunate thing for me is I am acquainted with a lot of our roster, and that helps me a great deal.''
Frazier spoke Wednesday at Rush Creek Golf Club before the team's yearly charity golf occasion to benefit the Vikings Children's Fund.
``Our business has done lots of right things in my mind, so far as handling this lockout within the right way and preparing us for some of the things that are going to arrive,'' Frazier stated. ``We talked through some things yesterday with our ownership and just went through a few of the various scenarios. So I really feel confident that when the time comes - because of the leadership that we have on our offense, our defense, our special teams, our employees - that we'll be ready to go.''
Place in charge when Brad Childress was fired final November, and coaching the Vikings for your final six video games of that disappointing and tumultuous 2010 time, Frazier had a leg up on the task when he was hired as the coach in January.
Ponder has much to learn about his receivers, and offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave requirements time to educate the plays.
``We're at a significant disadvantage having a brand new quarterback along with a new offense without practice and coaching,'' wide receiver Greg Camarillo stated last week from Bradenton, Fla., where he worked out with Ponder and a little group of Vikings teammates.
All they can do is be as ready as possible.
``That's our job. If you're not prepared for it, I do not really feel bad for you,'' defensive finish Brian Robison said lately.
Robison continues to be doing combined martial arts routines near his home in Texas.
``Hopefully everyone is busting their butt to get there, and we're in a position to hit the ground running once the time comes,'' he said.
Frazier stated the business is ``still discussing'' a drop-dead date for committing to or canceling training camp at Minnesota State University in Mankato if the lockout stays in place. School starts there Aug. 22, so a delayed out-of-town camp is not likely.
The other contingency plans pertain to free company, where the Vikings will turn for help at several positions, quite possibly including quarterback.
Among the biggest unknowns is precisely which players will probably be around the marketplace, offered the uncertainty about eligibility requirements - could be four many years, could be 6 of experience - within the collective bargaining agreement.
``Whether or not it is a six-year plan or a five-year strategy and even guys that are at the end of 4, we have a checklist and we've recognized the men that we think match what we're searching for if we choose to go that route,'' Frazier said. ``We have not created a decision that we're going to go with a veteran quarterback, but we have an idea, according to the list we've place together, if we went that route who we'd target.''
