WITH Willie Tonga injured on the sideline, Cowboys second-rower Gavin Cooper was offered the job of filling the footwear of the Queensland and Australian representative. 

The job meant slotting a couple of metres out to the centres and absent from his beloved second-row spot.

Cooper took on the centre's duties with some caution in the lead-up to Saturday's encounter against the Roosters, even though in hindsight he had no have to worry.

The 25-year-old played the complete eighty Alcides Escobar Grey jersey  and played his component within the 20-6 victory, generating three offloads such as 1 to Cowboys co-captain Johnathan Thurston who as a result posted the Cowboy's final attempt. It was the try that noticed Thurston make a touching tribute to a well-loved and recently deceased former Cowboy, placing his hand on the recently embroidered phrases "Sam Faust 184" around the team's enjoying strip before searching in the direction of the sky.

"It was just exactly the same aged tale, running the right hole and getting the ball," Cooper stated of his component within the symbolic four-pointer.

"But I did not get much ball out in the centres, I am not truly used to it ... I will just maintain plugging away.

"Hopefully I won't be available too long ... and I get back again into second row and get back again to business."

Cooper isn't unfamiliar with taking his place in the centres, having played the place all through his eight-year NRL profession. But relocating from the group engine space to needing to mark some of the quickest athletes in Australian sport can be daunting.

"I do not thoughts it (being a centre), but Alcides Escobar Grey jersey up in opposition to a few of the quicker men we're facing in the next couple of weeks might be a little difficult," Cooper said.

"But if I am out there, I'll do the task.

Antonio Winterstein, who was one of the Cowboys' bigger off-season signings, endorsed the efficiency of his centre partner on Saturday.

"It's a large alter going from the front from the middle towards the centres," Winterstein stated. 

"It was a large challenge for him but he stepped as much as the plate and I believe he made his influence available.

"He writes himself off a little I believe, he was a bit worried about obtaining out of dummy-half simply because he stated he was not fast enough.

"But he created some pretty great yards down their left edge and he caused issues for (Roosters centre) Shaun Kenny-Dowall there.

"I believe he won that battle anyway."

Cooper obtained a couple of new stitches to his chin following the sport but was by no means the biggest damage problem for your Cowboys on the night.

Dallas Johnson and Aaron Payne endured heavy concussion throughout the sport.

But each players returned to action on the evening and were not around the Cowboys injury list. 

Cowboys co-captain Matt Scott, who has been suffering a niggling ankle damage of late, said the Cowboys had devoted their win on Saturday night to previous teammate Faust. 

"There's sufficient men here who played with Fausty and realized him well enough to want to play nicely for him," he stated.

"I suppose, in the big image, it is an insignificant gesture but it is something we could do to get a former Cowboy and a mate."

Scott also stated it was a privilege having Faust's title subsequent to his heart whilst in the heat of battle.

"I think it's an excellent gesture by the club," he said.

"It's something pretty special and it exhibits what influence he had on the club and the people in the club."
